Latitude and Longitude

Atlas and Timezone Database
Type in the first few letters of the city or place you're interested in and you'll be given a list of matching locations and their latitude and longitude. Click on the correct match and you'll get the location identified on a world map along with the current time.

FIPS Query
Obtain the FIPS (Federal Information Processing Standards) code for any place in the United States. This site can also help to provide the official spelling, a list of every "place" in a state, congressional district, and more.

Geographic Names Information System - Online Data Base Query Form
A very useful resource for retrieving latitude and longitude (including minutes and seconds) for a specific place or point of interest (even libraries and parks) in the U.S. Also provides the name of the 7.5' topographic map for that point.

Geographic Nameserver
For quick latitude, longitude and elevation of U.S. locations, you just can't beat the USGS.

Globe Server
This really neat site allows you to ask a geographic question in plain English and the site will attempt to provide an answer.

GNS Database Query
Access latitude and longitude information for places outside the U.S. from the National Imagery and Mapping Agency. The query form is quite extensive. Click the "Access GEOnet" button to get there.

HomeTownLocator Gazetteer
A very versatile site that allows users to browse physical and cultural features of the United States or quickly search tens of thousands of place names for quick population data, location, and maps of the place. Very useful!

Microsoft Expedia Maps
This Microsoft site provides some great world maps and can find just about any place on the planet, just select the region type in a place and Expedia will let you choose the best match.

Thesaurus of Geographic Names
Almost one million current and historical place names are in this database. Search or view the hierarchical structure to obtain latitude and longitude and sometimes a brief description.
