This Microsoft site provides some great world maps and can find just about any place on the planet, just select the region type in a place and Expedia will let you choose the best match. Thesaurus of Geographic Names
Almost one million current and historical place names are in this database. Search or view the hierarchical structure to obtain latitude and longitude and sometimes a brief description.
